A Piece of Furniture The Woodie Europe Dinghies

The designer of the Europe Dinghy, Belgian Alois Roland, originally built them in wood. When Rolands company went bankrupt, his assistant, Giuseppe Christalli continued building beautiful wood Europe dinghies. When the Europe Dinghy class went Olympic the wood boats were no longer competitive and the class became plastic and has remained one where the new boats are entirely made out of glass.

History of the Europe Dinghy from Classic Classes by Vanessa Bird.

My Dutch friend, René de la Rie, sent along photos of his stunning wooden Europe which is not a Roland or Christalli but a Tebberman. Tebberman was known primarily for his rudders and centerboards, and only built a few Europe Dinghies, but what lookers his Europe Dinghies were! Beautiful deep mahoganies were matched with contrasting lighter inlays to create masterpieces.

George A of Mid-Atlantic Musings also owns a woodie Europe, whilst not as stunning as a Tebberman this hull is very pretty. The lineage of Georges wooden Europe is also open to question. On his blog George A tries to identify the builder of his "woodie" Europe dinghy. George unveiled his woodie with a new Bosquet foredeck at this years Brigantine regatta.

Catamaran Boat Plans

If you are searching for catamaran boat plans afterward you already understand that catamarans offer one of the most secure sailing stages of any vessel afloat. The truth is, so secure are they that trimarans, and they, are often used to educate disabled people to sail and love and outdoor sport without oversight.

Plans are not cheap

And youve also likely found that boat building plans are not cheap. If youre intending to build your own catamaran afterward, if you are working to a tight budget then may be a better method that maybe youvent contemplated.

Expectancies

Now you can get hull design software that can allow you to design just the catamaran youre looking for. All of us have different thoughts regarding the aesthetics of boat design and hull contour so it makes sense to create plans that just represent what we need.

Simple to learn

Ten years ago such applications would have needed a training class to learn the best way to use it and would have cost thousands of dollars.

If you are assembling a catamaran then you are likely curious in the greatest possible functionality. Modern software includes hydrostatic and opposition computations in order to assess the likely performance advancements of any changes you make to hull shape.

I will never return to using other peoples strategies. You will likely find the same; you will never need to purchase catamaran boat plans.

Interior glass prep

Once back from a morning in the lab, I turned to the task of preparing for glassing the interior. As for the exterior, this involved some sanding. Actually, considerable sanding, in order to clean up some drips of epoxy that had worked through the stitch holes from the exterior. Also, I hadnt yet sanded the scarf joint on the center panel, so that got smoothed out. Once the bottom panel and first strake were clean and ready for glassing, I vacuumed out the interior (I have got to get a shop vac). Then the joint between the first and second strake was masked with packing tape to protect from epoxy overruns.
I also prepared some other parts for tomorrow. With any leftover epoxy from the glassing operation, I can glass the interior of the daggerboard trunk. Since I had already coated these parts with epoxy, I sanded in down and left a rough finished surface. I trimmed some glass cloth scraps to size. I plan to lay the cloth on the parts, then when the epoxy has reached gel stage, Ill use the daggerboard spacers as a template to trim the edges. Thus, the glass will only be on the interior trunk face, while the overall dimensions of the assembled trunk wont be increased by the thickness of the glass. I also have on hand some other parts, ready to be assembled with excess epoxy. Mainsail boom, mast joint and masthead cap, daggerboard handle, and skeg are ready to go.
Finally, I checked out the sails: 77 square feet of Dacron (?) cloth, complete with grommets, telltales, and battens. They look great- I cant wait to try them out! Total hours 44.00.

Hole y Day

After days of prep work, the hull assembly began today. The method of construction of this boat is called "stitch and glue", meaning the individual parts are wired together before being sealed with epoxy at the seams. First, matching pairs of strakes are stacked up and 1/16" holes are drilled every 4 inches along the rabbet edge. A simple cardboard gage helped space the holes. Once the four pairs of strakes were drilled, stitching began.

About 34 holes were drilled along the length of each strake. For stitching, a large number of copper wire pieces were cut at about 3 inches each. With the end of the strake aligned with the end of the bottom panel, a corresponding hole was drilled in the bottom panel. The soft copper wire was then passed through and twisted to draw the panel together. Planks were stuck under the ends of the bottom panel to give some curve and allow proper alignment of the stitched pieces. Finally, the project is starting to vaguely look like a boat. Total hours 22.00.

Bit of Snow

We had a bit of snow and wind over the weekend here in the Mid Atlantic. Damned inconvenient in the modern world... waiting, ... waiting...  house-bound, but the snow plow did finally come through today to free us up. Shine on!

In the calm, cool morning air, my Passagemaker Dinghy got her long-awaited first coat of varnish. For the bright finish, I am using Interlux Schooner varnish. This product will give a high gloss, while also giving UV protection to the underlying epoxy. On the whole, I was pleased with how the first attempt went. I was able to experiment with the application characteristics of the varnish on the daggerboard, which got a first coat some time ago. There certainly is a lot of surface area on the inside of this boat! I used a roller to cover some of the larger, flat expanses. But a foam brush was still needed for tipping in, and also for the many tight spots and corners. Keeping the coat as thin as possible, I think I managed to avoid many drips and sags. The entire interior and exterior transoms and sheer strake took just about one-half quart to coat. I have three quarts on hand, which will give me enough for the recommended 5-6 coats that are needed for a durable finish. Even after this first, I am encouraged with how things look. And now, Im more eager than ever to get out on the water! Total Hours 90.50.

Middle Bulkhead

Tonight I wired in the middle bulkhead. This was more of a job than the bow bulkhead yesterday. The port side strakes didnt want to form up tightly to the shape of the bulkhead, and several extra stitches and some muscle was needed for a good fit on that side. But several broken stitches later, things seem pretty close to being in place. Some further tuning might be needed before I start sealing the joints between the strakes this weekend. What makes this blog run

What makes this erudite sailing blog possible? How does Instagram save all those millions and millions of selfie photos? Where is the cloud? (Many of us dont trust it wherever it is.) How can Gmail save all my emails, even the ones I didnt mean to send? Why does Facebook still have THAT PHOTO of a certain college party after all these years

This video does the best of any to explain the technology of acres and acres of data farms that makes the cloud possible and has taken us beyond the single computer workstation (and shlepping a floppy disk hither and yon) into the hyper connected world. Nuts!

A little over a month ago, I assembled my boat trailer, only to find that the kit was missing a crucial part. In fact, without the spindle nut, one of the wheels was held on very precariously by only a cotter pin. I contacted the place where I bought the trailer, and they are still in the process of sending me a replacement part. In the meantime, I searched several hardware stores in the local area, but couldnt find a simple, yet hard-to-find nut. Finally yesterday, I received a package from a different online store: my 3/4", 16-thread castle/slotted/spindle nut arrived, and now both wheels of my trailer are securely fastened, ready for the road.

I hope to finish the sanding of the interior this weekend. Then I can flip the boat over to do the exterior. I anticipate the exterior will go a little faster. Then painting and varnishing can begin!

Back to the grind

May has been a busy and productive month for me. Unfortunately, the productivity hasnt been in the area of boatbuilding. But after some family obligations, a trip out of town, and some business dealings, I was finally able to return to boat sanding this evening. I touched up some last spots with the 120 grit paper, then gave the interior a light going-over with the 220 grit. It looks virtually ready for varnishing. But first, I will have to turn my attention to the exterior, which is as yet untouched. In fact, the skeg and skids still need to be epoxy coated. One good thing is that an early summer has come to the deep South, and so that epoxy should set up quickly! Indeed, if there is a recipe for messiness, in includes sanding dust, 90-plus temps, and sweat. But after a cool shower, I am revived, and excited to finally get back to my Passagemaker dinghy. Header Photo Rigging on the yard of Brigantine Y C

The previous header photo was the young one of Team Albaugh, Erik, rigging his Savannah Mistral Classic Moth in the yard of Brigantine Y.C. (his then girlfriend, now fiance is helpfully pitching in).

This year, 2015, marked the 24th running of the Brigantine Classic Moth Regatta, an event singlehandedly organized by the Albaughs (with a dynamite pre-race party hosted by the Courters). Thirteen Classics raced and it marked my first day on the water this year. Good thing the winds were lightish as I felt a complete klutz in my Moth, which is to be expected. A good time. Mike Parsons of Cooper River ran away and hid from the fleet in all races to take the overall results.

I had some time to take a couple of yard shots before shoving off for the racing.

Team Albaugh was in fluorescent green for the regatta.

Looming on the horizon are the famous casino towers of Atlantic City.

My trusty Maser has been going through a bout of repairs over the last year (hence the white primer). I have been accused several times of taking a nice looking sailing dinghy and making it uglier, year by year. I resemble that remark! (a somewhat funny American switcheroo on the comment, "I resent that remark!")

Bloody Mary Handicap Race 2015

There is nothing like this in entire world. In the middle of winter, 235 racing dinghies from most of the English classes, and based all around England, show up at a reservoir in West London to race a pursuit race. This year the breeze was on and Yachts and Yachting online has the story.

If you are like me and can watch dinghies planing this-way-and-that-way all day long on YouTube, youll find this video of the 2015 Bloody Mary enjoyable. Its nice to see the 1960s vintage Fireball placing on top. They still have symmetrical spinnakers and seeing the crew manhandle the spinnaker pole onto the mast on the spinnaker sets reminds me of my crewing days. One can also glimpse the two new singlehanders, the RS Aero and the D-Zero making appearances at the leeward mark.

(I also noticed Steve Cockerill, head honcho of Rooster Sailing, who can have his pick of the latest, greatest sailing kit, sailing without gloves....Wassup with that!...Ouch!)

Scarf

Scarf, scarf, scarf! For some reason, I really like the sound of the word. Sometimes I think the reason Im drawn to all things nautical is because of the terminology. I mean, just try to say "baggywrinkle" out loud without smiling.

Anyway, I continued on with the joining of more scarf joints. The first trial pair turned out less than ideal. One shifted about a quarter inch while it set up. And both turned out a little less clean than I would have liked. Live and learn! At least the rub rails look real good. The two pair that I set up today should come out better- Ive learned more about what to look for, and some more crucial points at which to add clamps. Total hours 3.75.

The clock is ticking

In what may be a sign of how this project goes, I hit a snag right out of the box. Literally. Equipped with a freshly bought piece of plywood, I was ready to set it on some sawhorses for a work bench. Put when I opened the box containing the new sawhorses, I found they were not ready to use, but rather came in many small pieces, with dozens of bolts and screws with which to assemble them. It took nearly an hour and a half to complete that unexpected chore. But then things began in earnest. There was still prep work. I had to unwrap the carefully cut and packaged side planks. The delicate bevel on each piece was wrapped in foam and many layers of tape. Once these eight pieces of lumber were unwrapped, along with the eight rub rail strips, then the epoxy work could begin.

The beveled ends of the rub rails were easily aligned and then epoxied and clamped for overnight curing. The side planks were a little more difficult. They had to be done in pairs, so that each side on the boat would later come into alignment. So the plank from left and right (port and starboard) were stacked up, with plastic sheets separating each layer. The curve of the board had to be carefully measured against a flat reference line for each pair, and then epoxy was applied.

Once aligned and epoxied, the whole stack was clamped down with a board that was screwed into the work table with sheetrock screws. Since I am a little unsure of my technique, I will let the first pair of boards set up overnight and check it tomorrow before I try the other three sets. But at least the project has begun. R2AK The Marathon Begins

"In the name of uncomfortable fun!"

R2AK, the Race to Alaska, a 750 mile jumbo version of the Everglades Challenge, started the 2nd and final leg yesterday. The first leg, raced last Thursday, was a 40 mile sprint from Port Townshend, Washington to Victoria. The rules are simple; no engines, no outside assistance.

Unlike the Everglades Challenge, the R2AK racetrack is open water, very cold and some of the entries are sensible, full out cruising craft. I expect once the dust has settled, the racier catamarans and trimarans will fill the top spots. I dont envy those hardy kayakers in their kayak-trimaran hybrids who will spend the entire race ensconced in their dry suits.

For those who like to get their online jollies by watching the R2AK unfold, the organizers have got that covered - just click here for the race tracker.

There is at least one large open dinghy racing (editors correction: There are two - a Mirror 16 is also competing). Team Barefoot is the product of Barefoot Wooden Boats and is a Tad Roberts design, a 5.8 meter (19 foot) plywood dinghy playing in the same design space for long distance small boats as the i550 mini-sportboat. In looking at the video, the Barefoot dinghy appears to be more in the realm of a high freeboard Classic International 14 from the 1980s. Team Barefoot put this interesting video up on their dinghy and the thoughts behind designing for this race.

Team Barefoot Wooden Boats | Race to Alaska 2015 from Vancouver Maritime Museum on Vimeo.

Designer Tad Roberts has the sideview and sailplan of the Barefoot Dinghy over here.

It turns out that Classic Mothist, Jeff Linton, is pursuing the same direction for the next Everglades Challenge. He has scrapped his modified Flying Scot (which won the monohull class in 2014) and is home-building a new 6.7 meter, O.H. Rogers designed, large dinghy for next years Challenge. Boatbuilding details with lots of photos are over at Amy Lintons blog.

Interior fillets and glass

Just ahead of a possible rare snowfall in the Birmingham area, I finished the job of glassing the interior of the boat. The first step was to apply a fillet of wood flour-thickened epoxy to the joint between the bottom panel and the first strake. This filled the gap that existed in some spots, and also created a smooth radius to accommodate the glass cloth. This had to be done carefully and neatly, since it will be visible underneath the cloth and the bright (varnished) finish that will be used in the interior. With the fillet freshly applied, the cloth was laid over the bottom and first side panel and wrinkles were smoothed. At the beam, the cloth is just wide enough to cover. At this point, the unthickened epoxy was mixed, poured, and carefully spread and worked into the cloth. Wrinkles and bubbles were worked out, and the result was satisfactory. I found that I had to keep a watchful eye especially on the joints and stitch holes, as new air bubbles kept appearing underneath the cloth. These are easily removed, but more kept appearing for an hour or so before everything became saturated. In a couple of hours, the epoxy will reach gel stage, and the excess cloth can be trimmed off, as before on the exterior. The third photo below below shows a closer view of the fillet and glassed bottom. For a novice, a decent job. Total hours 46.25.

The Swallow Scow Plans The Rudder Magazines Second DIY Scow

The Rudder magazine launched their second scow, the Swallow, a 24 foot, three person scow in December 1898, just three months after they started publishing the plans for the 16 foot Lark scow. A year later, in the November and December 1899 issues of the magazine, they would serialize the Swallow plans, and like the Lark, issue a stand-alone plans and building booklet  The design is credited to Charles Mower but the prototype builder, Larry Huntington, was a renowned scow designer in his own right. I cant imagine that Larry Huntington didnt have a large say in the design of this scow so I personally would credit the design to a collaboration, a Mower/Huntington design.

As with the Lark scow, the Swallow proved very popular with amateur builders and was built around the world. Unlike the Lark, the Swallow didnt make it wholly into todays sailing scene. In looking at all the modern day scow designs, it appears to me that only the Sea Island One-Design seems to have inherited a large portion of her DNA from the Swallow. (The Sea Island One-Design ended up wider, particularly at the back end.)

For those who wish to delve further, you are in luck; the Library of Congress has scanned the Swallow plans booklet into PDF format.
